Chardham Yatra is not just a holy pilgrimage but a way to connect with God and experience spiritual enlightenment and solace. However, since all these four sacred sites including Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath are located at high altitudes and you may even have to trek to reach these sites, planning your Yatra becomes very important. The weather at these destinations is also very cold even in the summer so you need to pack accordingly. By planning your Yatra beforehand you can enjoy the trip to the fullest and deal with all the challenges that you may have to encounter during the trip.
Opening and Closing Dates
Usually, the Char Dham Yatra can be undertaken from April End – October End. However, each year announcement is made by the Uttarakhand Government about the dates of the closing and opening of the circuit. In the winter, the four sacred shrines are moved to their winter destinations namely, Ukhimath, Mukhba, Joshimath, and Kharsali for the deities of Kedarnath, Gangotri, Badrinath, and Yamunotri respectively. These winter Dhams gates remain open for devotees. Around the time of Diwali, most temples close which usually falls in November or October.

Things to Keep in Mind
- Remember to remove your shoes and cover your head before entering the temples.
- Check the exact closing and opening dates of the temples before embarking on the Yatra.
- Ensure you do not litter anywhere during the journey. You should keep the secluded locations and areas around the temples in their pristine conditions and preserve the region’s biodiversity.
- Carry heavy woolen clothes even if you’re travelling in summer as the Chardham sites are usually cold even in this season. Since the weather can change anytime you’re advised to dress in layers.
- Do carry a high SPF sunscreen, creams, and moisturizers.
- Pack a medical kit with cough lozenges, painkillers, antibiotics, antiseptic cream, Iodine, medicines for cold, and fever, and tube-squeeze cream along with your routine medicines.
- Pack snacks such as dry fruits, trail mix, energy bars, or roasted makhanas.
- If photography is not allowed in certain places, do not take pictures. Do not play with any particular religion’s sentiments.
- At least a month before undertaking the Chardham Yatra, you should start preparatory exercises.
- Carry extra films and batteries for your camera, as electricity in such remote places is not regular.
- Do not undertake the Yatra in the rainy season as there are chances of road blockage and landslides during that time.
- Book hotel rooms and transportation in advance if you are travelling in the peak season as there is a heavy rush of pilgrims.

How to Reach
There are three ways to reach Chardham sites including air, road, or rail.
By Rail
Rishikesh and Haridwar are the nearest railway stations to the Chardham sites are Haridwar. From these stations, you can easily board buses or hire taxis to reach the Chardham sites.
By Road
Pilgrims can reach the Chardham sites by road from major cities such as Haridwar, Dehradun, and Delhi. Private taxis and regular bus services are available for transportation to the Chardham sites.
By Air
Pantnagar Airport in Uttarakhand and Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun are the nearest airports to the Chardham sites. From these airports, you can take connecting flights or hire taxis to reach the nearest airport to your chosen Chardham site.
Registration Process
Registration is important for all the pilgrims for safety and crowd management.
Online Registration
To register online, you need to follow these steps:
- Visit the government’s official registration site.
- Upload your ID proof (preferably PAN/ Aadhaar Card/Voter ID).
- Now you need to fill in your travel dates.
- At the end of the registration process, you’ll get an e-Pass. Get its print and download your slip.
- You will have to bring the slip on your trip, as it will be checked at multiple checkpoints.
Offline Registration
For those who do not want to register online, offline counters are available at important locations along the route of the Yatra.
Chardham Registration counters are available at the designated places including Barkot, Heena, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Pandukeshwar, and Sonprayag.
