About Gangotri Dham
The main attraction of Gangotri is the Gangotri Temple, which is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. Gangotri, with its spirituality, serene atmosphere, and breathtaking scenery, is considered to be the best place to find peace of mind and solitude. The sacred River Bhagirathi, one of the Ganges' primary tributaries, flows beside this temple.
As per the beliefs, during his exile period, Lord Ram visited Gangotri, and Hanuman also worshipped and visited goddess Ganga once in Gangotri. At present, the temple is situated at the place where goddess Ganga is worshipped by the devotees, but originally the temple was not the worship place in Gangotri. Though even in ancient times, Gangotri was visited by pilgrims from all corners of the world, there was no idol or temple of Goddess Ganga there. Rather, priests and devotees used to worship the stream of the river Ganga. All the rituals were performed at the riverbank itself.
Gangotri is a holy town in Uttarakhand situated at a height of 11,200 feet above sea level. It is considered to be one of the holiest sites due to its serene atmosphere and spiritual vibes.
Gangotri Temple Opening & Closing Dates
Typically, Gangotri Dham’s doorway opens on Akshaya Tritiya, which is generally celebrated on 19nd April 2026. Gangotri Dham portal’s closure usually takes place on the day after Diwali, which will fall this year on November 2nd, 2026. The opening ceremony of the temple portal is a special Pooja for the Ganga goddess, which is conducted in the premises of the temple and along the river banks. The priests usually decide the opening and closing dates of the temple. Because of heavy snowfall throughout winter, the Gangotri temple remains closed. Ma Ganga’s deity is transferred in winter to Mukhba Village, which is situated near Harsil.
